Your AWS re:Invent 2018 Survival Guide

By Leslie McCollom on October 4, 2018
We’ve gathered everything you need to know to not only survive, but make the very most of your AWS re:Invent 2018 experience — whether you’re returning or going for the first time, or even following along from the comfort of your own home.

The biggest AWS cloud event of the year is almost here! AWS re:Invent 2018 will take place in Las Vegas November 26th-30th.

This is not our first re:Invent — in fact it’s our seventh. We’ve had a presence there since the very first year. We’ve tapped the combined experiences of our Cloudability employee network and compiled recommendations and information to help make your re:Invent effortless, educational and enjoyable.

Strengthen Cloud Skills

As previously mentioned, AWS will both repeat and simulcast the most popular sessions to ensure all get a chance to view them in real-time. We still recommend signing up as soon as registration opens on October 11th to hold your spot. Join this webinar for tips on registering and more, then start scouring the catalog for sessions. For anyone looking to optimize cloud usage and costs, we’re really excited about these three:

CMP371-R – Optimizing Amazon EBS for Performance

Join this Chalk Talk Session to learn key techniques and practices while using Amazon EBS that can help push performance and optimize spend. In this session, Sajee Mathew, Principal Solutions Architect at AWS, will show you how to optimize storage performance and costs for Amazon EBS using tools such as Amazon CloudWatch, AWS Trusted Advisor and third-party tools such as Cloudability. This session is also available in two repeat sessions on the 28th and the 30th.

DEV316-S – Reuters Live: Scaling & Monitoring On-Demand Video in the Cloud

The news media business is time-critical and can attract massive audiences with little-to-no notice. AWS Cloud is a perfect fit for this type of workload with a wide range of available services. Watch as Reuters shares its approach to building, managing and monitoring robust systems for live events with the support of AWS and Cloudability partner, Datadog.

DEM55 – Challenges of Container Cost Allocation and Chargeback

Cloudability CTO, Erik Onnen, will discuss the benefits and challenges of various cost allocation algorithms for effective container cost allocation in AWS. No registration needed for this one! Simply stop by the Kumo Theater, located on the re:Invent Expo Floor in Hall B, Tuesday, November 27th at 11:10 AM.

Connect with Other Attendees

Make the most of your event experience by attending as many meet-and-greet type events as possible. The sessions at re:Invent are also a great place to connect with like-minded professionals who may be facing similar challenges and can offer their own experiences and perspectives.

For great conversation and connections with fellow cloud users and experts, stop by Cloudability’s Pub Crawl Stop, Public House, during the re:Invent Pub Crawl on Tuesday, November 27th from 6-8 pm.

Recharge at re:Invent

The conference is incredibly fast-paced — sometimes you need to duck out of the madness for a minute. Whether you’re just grabbing a quick bite, want a show-stopping experience to wow a colleague, or need to have a chat somewhere quiet, here are a few options.

A Quick Table in a (Relatively) Quiet Setting — Grand Lux Cafe

If you just need a moment to get off your feet or are looking for a quick table to chat with a fellow attendee, Grand Lux Cafe, with locations in both The Venetian and The Palazzo, is a great bet. They’re known for breakfast, but are open 24 hours, so you always have a reliable place to recharge your devices and fuel up on food or drink.

Upscale Dinner for a Large Group — Estiatorio Milos

Cloudability CEO and Founder, Mat Ellis, recommends this fresh Mediterranean seafood spot in The Cosmopolitan for an amazing Vegas dining experience. Perfect for an elegant dinner, Condé Nast Traveler also declared it “the best power lunch crowd in Las Vegas.”

Off-The-Beaten-Path Slices — Secret Pizza

Impress new and old friends by taking them to this hard-to-find slicery in The Cosmopolitan.

Unexpected Hits of Vegas — Cloudability Employee Edition

At last year’s re:Invent, Cloudability employees enjoyed delicious Peruvian, Brazilian, Japanese fusion food at SUSHISAMBA in The Palazzo.

With the campus growing every year, don’t be surprised if you get a little footsore. Last year, Cloudies soothed aching feet and unwound after a long day with bath bombs from Basin White in the Grand Canal Shoppes inside the Venetian and the Palazzo.
