Meet the Team at AWS Summit London
The AWS Summit season is well underway this year! We’ve already had great events in San Francisco, Singapore and Sydney. You may have seen Cloudability’s Andrew Midgley talking at AWS Summit Sydney about Improving Your Chances of Cloud Success. You can always check out similar insights and best practices in our latest resources.
This year, the AWS Summit in London activities are running throughout May 9, followed by the main summit event, general sessions and related activities on May 10. As a member of Cloudability’s EMEA Team, I wanted to give you my own spin on what to expect from AWS Summit London, as well as provide some of my personal recommendations for how best to explore London while you are in town!
What’s Happening at AWS Summit London
At AWS Summit London you can expect all of the regular fixtures you’ve come to expect from previous summits, such as AWS certificate training and “Ask an AWS Architect,” among others. But here’s a rundown of some never-before-seen sessions you can catch in London.
Some of our top picks for sessions on May 10th include:
- 9:40 – 11:30 – Keynote
Dr. Werner Vogels, Chief Technology Officer, Amazon.com and Gavin Jackson, Managing Director, AWS UK. This lineup is always a must-see for anyone wanting to know how the cloud is accelerating innovation in businesses of all sizes.
- 11.45 – 12:30 – Operations at Scale
Growing and scaling. How do you grow with your business and meet your business needs? How do you rise to the new challenges before you? In this session, they discuss what the differences are in preparing to operate in the cloud, what your operational priorities need to be.
- 15:50 – 16:35 – Scaling up to and Beyond 10 Million Users
In this session, they will review the best practice and AWS services that can help you going from 0 to 10 million users.
While at the Summit, sessions will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. AWS recommend taking advantage of the scheduling tools on the AWS Summit mobile app to help organise your day. At the of time of publication, the app is not yet available, but it will be released in the coming weeks. Be sure to check out the full list of sessions on the AWS Summit London session page.
Come Meet the Team!
Of course the Cloudability team will be at AWS Summit London. Why not stop by booth G5 and say hi? We’ll be giving friendly advice, product demos along with giving out our famous t-shirts and our book, Cloud Control Volume 2. (If you can’t make it to the show but still want a copy of the book, have no fear – we will drop one in the mail!)
In this new book edition, you’ll learn:
- How a cloud migration strategy can impact your bottom line
- Key tactics for optimizing utilisation or reducing cloud service rates
- Managing vendor discounts, such as AWS Reserved Instances
- How to keep cloud spend predictably within budget
- Why building a culture where everyone’s involved with cloud optimisation matters
What to Do in the Downtime Between Sessions
The activities on the first day finish at 4pm, so that gives you plenty of time before the next day to sample some of London’s finest sights and to grab some fuel so you’re ready to go on day two! Here are some ideas to get you started:
- The Gypsy Moth
Located in Greenwich right next to the Cutty Sark, this bustling pub is only a short DLR train ride away from the Summit. It’s a great place for food and you can always explore further into Greenwich which has a rich maritime history.
- Bread Street Kitchen
If you jump on the DLR you can go direct to Bank station and find this great eatery a few streets away. It’s run by Gordon Ramsey but is still very reasonably priced and has a relaxed atmosphere. You can always take in a few nearby sights such as the stunning St Paul’s Cathedral.
- The Old Brewery
This again is in Greenwich, very close to the ExCel centre and it has a wide selection of good food dishes. You could also visit the Painted Hall, which is Britain’s largest painted ceiling and is part of the old Royal Naval College – it is currently under a major conservation project but you can actually go up 60ft to be next to the ceiling and get face to face with the work that’s being done.
- The Comedy Store
If you want to get away from all things tech there is nothing to soothe the soul more than some laughter. You are guaranteed to be feeling better after going to a live session at The Comedy Store, just make sure it is not too much of a late night so you can start strong the next day!
Whatever you get up to in your time at AWS Summit London, make sure to come see the Cloudability team, including myself, as well as J.R. Storment, Co-Founder and GM of EMEA, to ask any cloud cost related questions at booth G5.
