AWS re:Invent 2017 Session Reservation Is Live
[EDIT: 10/19/17] The AWS re:Invent 2017 Sessions Reservation function should be live, but some users are reporting errors. We’ve learned that one solution to being able to log in is to change the password to your account and then log back into the session planner (thanks, Twitterverse).
AWS re:Invent 2017 is quickly approaching (Nov. 27-Dec. 1), and with 50,000 people expected to attend this year, it will be bigger than ever before. We’ve gathered some tips to make sure you don’t miss a beat on registering for your cloud sessions.
re:Invent’s breakout sessions allow you to go in-depth on topics and walk away with knowledge that will enrich your world and help you do your job better. We’re hoping you’ll join our experts and customers in discovering the key benefits of a cloud strategy and how to build a culture of continuous cloud optimization at your organization.
The session planner will go live either on or after October 12th, but you can’t reserve anything until the 19th when the re:Invent app launches. As your trusty re:Invent experts, we’ve been keeping an eye on the session registration process to spot significant changes from previous years. So far there has been on YouTube broadcast on Reserved Seating, which we’ve pulled insights out of into this article.
Why Do I Need to Reserve a Session Seat?
Reserving your seat now is the best way to ensure that you won’t miss out. There are only so many seats available per session. With an estimated 50,000 attendees, re:Invent 2017 will be AWS’s largest one yet. So, if attendees from previous years had a hard time getting into sessions and finding a seat, expect this year’s to have even more of a challenge.
In 2017, you can reserve sessions from both the re:Invent App and the web experience.
As we learned from their 2017 broadcast on using Reserved Seating:
- All sessions have 75% of seats available for reservation and 25% available for walk-ins.
- Once a session is full, attendees go to a waitlist.
- Waitlisted attendees will get available seats in the order that they were added to the list.
- Only one session can be reserved for a given calendar time slot (so you won’t be able to double-book your calendar).
- Don’t be late: ten minutes before a session, all reserved seats will be canceled and seating will be available for walk-ins.
- Session start times will be staggered with 45 minutes in between each session
We expect that AWS will want to make the re:Invent app and the Session Planner a main part of their experience, so be sure to download the app and make sure your login works ahead of time. Once again, the app is available on October 19th.
How to Reserve a Seat For a Session
The AWS re:Invent 2017 team launched a video on how to reserve seating in both their app and website.
- Session Reservation details start at the beginning of the broadcast.
- Mobile app commentary begins at about the 6:00 mark.
- Web app commentary begins at the 17:11 mark.
Can I Just Walk into a Session?
You could definitely try. However, the re:Invent campus is much larger as it is spread across a few more hotels this year. Walk-in attendees are allowed to have a seat once the badges of attendees with reserved seats are scanned. In 2017, walk-in seating will be available ten minutes before the start of the session.
Planning ahead is key to ensuring that you don’t get shut out of a session. Our re:Invent veterans recommend planning ample amounts of time to travel between venues. Make use of the re:Invent Session Planner calendar and try to coordinate walking or ride times so you have enough time to traverse the lines and get to your seat.
How Can I Make Sure I Don’t Get Shut out of a Session?
Here are some proven best practices from last year that helped our team and other cloud enthusiasts get into their sessions.
Use the re:Invent App
According to the AWS broadcast, there will be a live stream function and shuttle scheduling on the 2017 app. Use these perks to your advantage if you feel like you’ll be behind schedule.
NOTE: Use your re:Invent event registration login and not your AWS customer login or Amazon login!
Start With Your “Favorites” List
Start building your favorites list now. Once Reserved Seating is live, start reserving seats at those “favorite” sessions. Keep in mind that there will be thousands of other folks vying for the same seats, so don’t wait too long!
Use the Session Planner Calendar to Visualize Your Day
AWS has a “personal time” option on the Session Planner to help attendees enter free time that can represent work, meetings, mealtimes and breaks to help plan event days better. Use these blocks to build in reminders to get moving between your sessions. With a much larger campus to cover, you’ll want to build in ample walk or ride time to make sure you get from session to session and not get locked out!
